Fowler Middle School: Knowing & Advancing Each Child
What is ILA?
ILA stands for "Integrated Language Arts". This course combines reading and writing into one 90 minute class. Students will analyze and write about a variety of texts from different genres and cultures.
Because students will spend twice the amount of time in ILA than any other class per week it is important that they keep up with any missed assignments. What will students read?Lit. Circles and Socratic Discussions:
For the majority of the school year students will be responsible for completing their weekly required reading from their group’s chosen novel. Each Friday, in addition to Vocabulary Quizzes, students must come to class with their 3 Levels of Questions completed and be prepared to engage in a Socratic discussion with their groups. Students will read between 4 to 6 novels with their reading groups this year. Class Novel: In addition to literature circles, students will also engage with a novel as a whole class. This novel unit will include Socratic seminars, essays, projects, and much more. What will students write?Students will write daily and in a variety of writing forms.
